This conversation made me think of a couple things...How many times I’ve heard our national anthem (thousands of times) it never gets old and the older I have become the more powerful it’s effect on me.

I know you are both younger and to hear you both talk of love for our country makes me very happy. Our country is not just an idea but a people with a culture and a physical location.

I also thought of the song “Battle of New Orleans” by Johnny Horton. May not be familiar with that one lol

I loved this conversation I remember seeing the movie as a kid and adoring the song, and the character of the captain, I revisited the song when around the time of the Mueller report a journalist idiotically called it a “Nazi song”, since then I’ve adopted it as a kind of personal anthem for the bittersweet patriotism it expresses

It seems to me it would be unpatriotic to never question or critique ways in which one's beloved country is straying from its ideals and potential.
