Why do we resist doing things that we know are good for our well-being while craving things that are detrimental to it? Maybe the central Western conflict concerns how much reason can and should be our guide in distinguishing what is good for us from what is bad. The test of reason is how much it not only can distinguish good from bad but cause us to take the good way instead of the bad way.
The deep nature of humans is selfishness! The easiest path is to go with it and many do. The hardest and best path is to consider others in our decision. Also, Christian faith has more reason than does atheistic faith.
We suffer for our actions, and Christ suffered for our actions. We suffer as the consequence of some of our actions & sometimes of others actions. We embrace actions that are destructive.
