On Spencer Klavin’s point, essentially "the the utter inadequacy [the old lights used the word “depravity”] of man," I completely agree.
From the early Progressive’s certainty about science and eugenics to the Great Society’s utter certainty about what civil rights meant to our current obsessions with any kind of “science” at all the complete lack of humility in the governing class has caused the world no end of trouble.
Klavin says " Christian faith as a daily practice of internalizing the most uncomfortable truths possible." Actually, it is the opposite. Like most religions, Christianity tries to ignore the uncomfortable truths life throws our way. Ex: God is not benevolent toward mankind, but allows things to happen as they will.
Difficult times produce great leaders and people. Harsh truths are reality. I think of it as a crucible. The next challenge. Will we come out as if we were fire forged steel or a thin piece of aluminum?
Tip a horn of beer and embrace the challenge. To protect the American idea and it’s people is a noble cause. America is good and beautiful.
