I agree with the article's general sentiment, but I'm a bit disappointed at the sleight of hand that uses the tale of Katy Perry's sellout status (and whoever Ingrid Michaelson is) to indict Lady Gaga.

Even though serves a set of ideals that are either immoral or antithetical to conservative thinking, denying Lady Gaga's status as a producer of modern pop art doesn't achieve much. Especially considering her thematic and musical consistency over her entire career (barring strange outings like the song Born This Way and the album Joanne that do mirror a Perry-esque need to be immediately lauded and shared).

Of course it isn't the classics or in the canon, but it's noteworthy and possibly worthy of study. Most importantly, it is what the culture is now, and so an argument that claims she is the same as others with less status in the same game will be sussed out even by the most basic followers of the culture and will ultimately prove unconvincing.

I dislike the Hollywood-Washington love-fest as much as the next guy, but I think that needs proper examination separated from each artist's own "merits".
