How much of a republic was the United States when large groups of people could not vote? We had a republic of sorts but it was limited to the categories of people allowed to participate. If there were large numbers of people that could not participate, we were only a republic for those allowed to have a voice.

The speaker referred to our present "mental illness." The disallowance of certain groups was partly due to the sociopolitical mental illness that condoned slavery, racism, misogyny, the manipulation of the economy for the benefit of the wealthy and so on. We've always had this in our country. Every country has had it in one form or another. The English treated the Scots and the Irish like animals. We know what the French Radicals did to people that disagreed with them, not just in Paris but in other parts of their country. We know that there is a lot of corruption in countries south of the Sahara, Africans treating other Africans unfairly. It isn't just in America.

The path of the asteroid mentioned at the beginning of the talk can be easily reckoned to the abuse that has been heaped on people in the U.S. for a long time. I recommend taking a look at

to see the stunning quantity and variety of mayhem Americans directed against other people in our country. The recent problems with the police aren't anything new. What is new is that certain people have decided they aren't going to take it anymore. We had people raising hell because they didn't want to pay taxes to King George. We should expect Americans not to raise hell over years and years of police brutality? Give me a break.

Meanwhile, we have aggrieved whites that act as though their grievances about the past election are apocalyptic. Donald Trump's encouragement and the incompetency of officials in Washington, D.C. gave us what we saw on TV last Wednesday. We are quite adept at creating more and more mental illness, it seems. The fact that it is easier to see is beside the point. It's no use to say that social media raises people's excitement and makes things all the worse. There are things that have to get fixed. Trump had his chance. Now it's Biden's turn.

And that's all I have to say about that.
